How AI and Machine Learning Will Change the Way We Design

Mehdi Nourbakhsh explores architectural design applications of AI and machine learning

Design automation through AI and machine learning isn’t one-size-fits-all; it’s a spectrum of possibilities. Designers can choose to fully automate mundane tasks that they’ve done thousands of times, like designing a standard bathroom. They can work collaboratively with AI to design something complex, like a new building. And they can turn automation off entirely for bespoke projects where the budget and schedule justify the efforts. Autodesk Principle Research Scientist Mehdi Nourbakhsh shares what’s possible today and why these tools will play a growing role in architectural design in the years to come.

About the speaker

Mehdi Nourbakhsh is a principal research scientist at Autodesk Research. He is passionate about working with leading AEC companies to bring future technologies to Autodesk customers. Currently, he leads an AI studio in San Francisco, focusing on the future of AI and machine learning in AEC. He holds a PhD in Design Computing and a master’s degree in Computer Science. For several years, he worked as a structural engineer and a construction manager for various AEC projects.
